New naira: CBN, EFCC others to track large withdrawals

​ The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has said that it would work with law enforcement agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, to complicate and track large withdrawals. He said this while briefing the press after the launch the new Naira banknotes in Abuja on Wednesday. At the briefing, Emefiele said that the amount of money that can be withdrawn from the counter would be reduced drastically, adding that bulk withdrawals would require several procedures and security checks to track use. 250 million Nigerians may fall into poverty in years to come – UNFPA

About 250 million Nigerians will fall into poverty in years to come, if the Federal Government of Nigeria fails to invest in healthcare and education, the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), has claimed. Ms Ulla Mueller, UNFPA Country Representative, made the revelation on Monday in Abuja at a parliamentary summit to fast track Nigeria’s demographic transition. According to her, the imperative the country has now is to take actions, stressing that in a world of 8 billion people, in a country that in a very few years will be the third most populous in the world, there could be 250 million people that could feel a sense of opportunities and possibilities. Court: INEC to resume voter registration

​ A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to immediately resume the continuous voters registration until 90 days before the 2023 general elections. Justice Inyang Ekwo, in the judgment, also directed INEC to ensure that eligible Nigerians were not deprived the opportunity to have their voter’s card for the forthcoming poll. Justice Ekwo held that it was the constitutional responsibility of the electoral umpire to make adequate provision for the exercise in accordance with the Nigerian laws. “The case of the plaintiffs succeeds on merit,” the judge declared. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Anajat Salmat and three others had sued INEC as sole defendant in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1343/2022. In the originating summons filed before the court, the plaintiffs argued that INEC cannot stop the CVR contrary to the stipulated provisions of the constitution. Prof. Muhammad Mustapha Akanbi SAN who died recently in Lagos. Tribute To My Beloved Mentor, Late. Prof. Muhammad Mustapha Akanbi, SAN

Some minutes after my dinner yesterday, I heard the tragic news of passing onto glory of my beloved mentor, Prof. Akanbi, whom I hold in high esteem. I was shocked; tears rolled down from my eyes with fervent prayers, hoping the news would be fake. Prof. Akanbi was a renowned Professor of Law whose exemplar and meaningful contributions to human capital and community development are reckoned with. I picked him as my mentor some 15 years ago when his late father, Justice Mustapha Akanbi visited my late grandfather, Alh. Sanni Baba Alaro. He told me about Prof. Muhammad Mustapha and said I should join the fold of his mentees, which Prof. accepted me and started with series of questions. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed has described the death of the Vice Chancellor, Kwara State University, Malete, Professor Muhammad Mustapha Olarongbe Aremu Akanbi as a massive loss to the University community and the State at large. FG Releases 2022 Poverty Index, Says 130m Nigerians Are Poor

​ The Federal Government, through the National Bureau of Statistics, on Thursday said 130 million Nigerians are poor. In its 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index Survey released in Abuja on Thursday, the NBS said the figure represents 63 per cent of the nation’s population. It added that the poverty index is mostly experienced in rural areas especially in the north with women and children being the most affected. It was reported that the survey was conducted by the NBS, the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). It was also gathered that the measure used to calculate the figure was based on Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) with five components of health, living standard, education, security, and unemployment. Sango/Elekoyangan protesters are not students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Management disclaims

​ The Management of Kwara State Polytechnic has disclaimed a report saying that the Polytechnic students are protesting along Sango / Elekoyangan Area over electricity matter. The Management in a statement signed by the Public Relation Officer, Mrs. Halimat Garba, stated that the protest was staged by members of the neighbouring communities who are said to be protesting over power failure in their communities. The statement read that “ Please note that the Polytechnic Students are presently on break, as the institution is preparing to commence a new Academic Session”.  She however advised all Polytechnic stakeholders and members of the public to be guided by this information and always verify anything tagged with the Polytechnic before circulating.
