CHANGING THE NARRATIVES: REBIRTHING THE CONDITIONS OF PART-TIME LECTURERS IN KWARA STATE POLYTECHNIC

By: Issa Olarewaju Abubakar

Decades ago till the recent past few years, the Kwara State Polytechnic has been operating alongside part-time lecturers like other institutions in Nigeria. The part-time lecturers carried out academic activities and add values to the image of the Polytechnic; they contributed to the building the image of the Polytechnic and made themselves available for the tasks assigned to them.

However, the salary scale for the part-time lecturers was not encouraging enough. This caused a great motivational deficit and hampered many other areas the lecturers ought to deliver qualitative academic services to the Polytechnic. The appointment of the ever-supportive leader and rector, Engr. Dr. Jimoh Abdul Mohammed brought a change in narratives of administering the Polytechnic.

The Rector sensed the need for a review of salary scale of the part-time lecturers in the Polytechnic and set-up a standing team to review the salary. The recommendations of the team led to 28% increment of the lecturers' salaries. Not only that, the paying process was also improved from cash to electronic.

Since honour will always be with the man who honour his fellows, Engr. Dr. Jimoh Abdul Mohammed has returned the honour this class of lecturers have been denied; he has awaken their sense of belonging and elevated their status to a befitting standard.

Also, the Rector has proven to be a purposeful leader by using his position to improve and build the capacity of part-time lecturers of the Polytechnic. This has raised the motivation, inspiration and positive feelings of the lecturers. Acknowledging the invaluable roles of the Rector on improving the welfares of the Polytechnic's workforce has earned him the name "the Visionary Rector."

It is worthy to stress that Kwara State Polytechnic wouldn't be recording these laudable progresses without the vision and support of our distinguished Governor of Kwara State. Mallam. AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq (CON) who appointed the Rector. The Governor set the pace for this great opportunity to champion the Polytechnic of our dreams. The outstanding Governor has been active in all sectors in Kwara State.

The Governor's holistic approach to governance extends beyond the Polytechnic, as he has been actively involved in various sectors of Kwara State. His commitment to excellence, progress, and inclusivity has earned him the title of an "Outstanding Governor." With his support and the visionary leadership of Engr. Dr. Jimoh Abdul Mohammed, the Kwara State Polytechnic is on a transformative path, poised to become a leading institution in Nigeria.
