An Open Letter To HND Pioneer Students Of Mass Comm

By: Olufadi Balarabe Teniola Ayuba

In 2021, the management of Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin announced the first-ever admission exercise for the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mass Communication. To some, they thought it was the usual declaration that won't eventually materialise as in previous years. Fortunately, it was accomplished, as we welcomed the historic set of students in a higher class tagged “Pioneer Set”. Your batch has proved to be a record-breaker in the history of the state polytechnic. Permit me to quickly cast your mind back to your early days at the higher helms. The first-ever campus campaign that celebrated the unsung heroes in the Nigerian Army which was gratefully acknowledged by the NHQ of the Armed Forces was not only organised by this set but also brought more recognition to the department and the polytechnic at large. Another exhibition that added incredible value to the great Citadel was the Advertising Competition which created room to showcase your promotional creativities and brand packaging. Equally, the broadcast students also produced the first-ever play in the history of the institution, titled “Chameleon Love” while the Print Students published the first-ever magazine with professionally rich content. There’s time for everything, your crew went on the first-ever trip to further broaden your practical experience and deepen your in-depth knowledge as communicators.

You fought and reconciled as human beings. You fell, lost, re-strategised and won as champions, despite all odds.  During your time, we won the Director and Rector’s Cups. We won the Advertising Pitch hosted by the University of Ilorin. You made us Champions on all fronts.

Meanwhile, every member of this outstanding set can’t be in the same grade. But, you can be on the same level with love and tolerance. Try to maintain your harmonious relationship and peaceful coexistence after this academic sojourn. Value your connection and build contacts. With your experiences (theoretical and practical), I believe you guys can prove to the world that you are the best. Would be looking forward to seeing you make headlines in our national dailies and international scenes as undisputed achievers in the nearest future.

I wish you guys the best of luck in your next phase of life. Aameen. I’ll surely miss you guys, especially those vibes during my birthday 😂😅. Continue striving to be a good ambassador for your family. And remember to always be proud of yourselves.

THE PLACE OF A MOTHER

By: Olufadi Balarabe Ayuba. Let her know the day she was born nakedly beautiful with tears of joy rolling down her stunningly soft cheeks.  Let her know the day she had enough words to say but could only speak through the inexhaustible care of her beloved mother.  Let her know those days she could not by herself take some walks down the road, but could comfortably tour the entire city tied on her mother's back. Let her know those days when she had to cry all night before she could answer nature's call, except lullabies were sung to ease her trips.  Let her know the days she couldn't bathe herself, compelling her mother to wake up early, warm the water, and ignore her refusal to take a bath every morning!  Let her know the day she couldn't do makeovers to beautify herself, as her mother took center stage to apply "Dusting Powder" to introduce the beauty of her Darling Princess to the world.  Let her know the days when all others had forsaken, except...
