ILORIN DURBAR: A Historic Celebration

By: Olufadi Balarabe Ayuba

In 2018, cultural integration arrived in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state, to bring people from far and near together. Indigenes and non-indigenes alike gathered before the Emir of Ilorin, Alh. Dr. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari (CFR), to commemorate Durbar and reconnect not only with the people and friends of Ilorin Emirate but also with their cultural heritage, reminding them of their glorious past to further promote and preserve the people's increasingly vanishing cultural heritage.

Durbar festival is usually celebrated on the second day following Eid-Fitri. It begins with prayers, is followed by a horse-drawn parade of the Emir and his entourage, accompanied by musicians, and concludes at the Emir's palace. Durbar festivals are held in cities such as Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zaria, and Bida, which are popular tourist destinations. Durbar was said to have arrived in Nigeria directly to the Northern region during the Colonia era. The first Durbar festivals were said to have taken place
in 1911, and were linked to ceremonial assemblies commemorating Queen Victoria's proclamation as Empress of Colonial India in 1877.

During the previous year's celebration, the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, rode on horses with his entourage through Abdulazeez Atttah Road, General Hospital roundabout, Ibrahim Taiwo Road, and Emir's Road, alongside friends and well-wishers, chanting "Sheeu, Sheeu."
It also saw the display of talents by Ilorin indigenes who traveled long distances to add glamour to the event
with their various musical presentations, much to the delight of the audience.

Berende is another highlight of the celebration, where horse riders demonstrate their riding skills at the Emir's palace. This was mostly done by experts who can control a horse's speed from the entrance to a designated point. Ilorin Emirates Durbar Festival continues to be an exciting platform.
