Academic Environment and Students

By: ADEYEMI Daniel B

Academic pursuit is not just a mere journey of certain duration; it is a great assignment that calls for resilience, unwavering commitments, dedications, and the like. Learners in any given field of study must approach education with open minds, total submission, and consistency. Therefore, it is important to note that enviable heights in life are ardently pursued to the very end.

The academic environment is a formal gathering of people of like mind; a symposium that allows interactions that aim for self-development, discovery of new facts, impartation, critical examinations of concepts and content, and practical application of knowledge to achieve a solution approach. All these are the cores of academic excellence; hence, academic pursuit requires the mental stability and physical well-being of any learner. The best is yet to be achieved, and as such, students of universities and other higher institutions are often seen on the fast track, striving to attain heights in their various academic fields. The strenuous efforts reveal the conceived ambitions.

The under-discussed phenomenon must be brought to the fore. An environment devoid of distractions, pollution, and other unpleasant situations enhances educational engagements—teaching and learning, collaborative interactions, et cetera—but the reverse is the case in this present generation. Environments are heavily polluted. It is alarming—quotidian issues that have become an eyesore.

It can be unarguably said that we have no minors in tertiary institutions; therefore, students ages should indicate maturity, but the behavior of some students proves the intuition wrong. Noise pollution, which is often above the standard decibel, has endangered academic places. Even some of our school libraries are not totally free from this menace. Letters on the wall are boldly written; they implore students to maintain absolute silence, give instructions on how a particular subject or object should be used, provide a total guide, and make the catalog easier to access. Do these letters appear to seek attention? Yes! Students do read, but instructions are trampled upon like an ant. It is a quotidian issue that calls for urgent attention.

The fallacy is there for all to see, but critical minds see it from different angles. What we called night-class has been observed in different places and spaces, but the hindrance followed the series of attempts. Eyes have seen and witnessed many sacrifices; countless candles have been burned at the altar of night-class; sleeping-walking souls waved off the blinking of the eyes; the aching body bore it to the very end; and the breaking of the day shows the path to the examination hall. The fact remains that we can go the extra mile to ensure academic excellence, but little or nothing can be achieved without serene environments. Hence, the real knowledge is far greater than the paper qualifications. An academic certificate tells us that the holder of such a certificate has completed the prescribed course, fulfilled certain conditions, and also gained prerequisite knowledge that has made him or her qualified for or suitable for a particular position or space. Certification is a true testament to resilience and full dedication, but the knowledge gained must reflect the viable contributions of the holder of such a certificate. A conducive learning environment enables assimilation and recollection of stored information at an appropriate time. It does indeed support mental stability and facilitate friendly teaching and learning.

Entertainment is part of learning, as it teaches morality and satirically exposes the ills of society. Music is part of learning, as it exposes, communicates, and connects with the soul; it changes the atmosphere; it assuages ill-feelings; and it sends stern warnings.

The use of home appliances ought to be at a minimal or moderate level. Deafening music, incessant pollution of the environment with the generator set, unnecessary brawls, and the like are nothing but nuisances. Students' communities are expected to be graciously and jealously maintained for educational engagements, but the generation of today has thrown the virtue to the dustbin. The health implications of these menaces are under-discussed in media spaces.

A sane person should not be seen as a nuisance, but a larger percentage of the so-called students are part of the societal problems. One wonders if many hostels are built for nighttime parties. The ear-deafening music is alarming; its irritation saturates the land, while its stoppage time gives no hope. It is a daily affairs which as turned to norms. Some students claimed that without music, reading and assimilation cannot be achieved on their own. The statement requires no proof, but it is just an axiom. Hedonism propels the act, and it produces no viable seed.

The excellence of Nigerian students resonates with the global recognition of many students. Today, Nigerian students make waves in the global world of academics.

The menace in our academic environment should not be covered. Indiscipline has gone beyond mere messures, and rotten fruits have become a stench—a foul stink that has endangered the knowledge, pedagogical deliberations, and mental health of many students.

The present generation is fortunate. It is a fortune in the sense that technologies are in abundance to facilitate personal research, autonomous learning, and immediate feedback through artificial intelligence. As earlier stated, a larger percentage of students abuse academic places with their devices. Many are seen going around with GamePads, laptops, and electric boxes, which end up polluting environments with the AIs.

Drastic efforts are to be made to arrest these perennial problems. The first step should come through the parent or guardian. Parents are to instill discipline, followed by the landlord/landlord association. The effort not to dwarf academic excellence lies in a serene environment. So, landlords should intensify the war against nuisances in their immediate environments.

The school provides students with numerous instructions that are to be followed by the latter. The strict compliance must be monitored by all the lecture-room lecturers, stakeholders, and students' union leaders. Penality should be given accordingly. In the same manner, no religion preaches nuisance; therefore, religious leaders should use the gathering of the saints to inculcate mores. It is achievable if all hands can be on deck. Attitudinal change is key as students learn, re-learn, and unlearn. Life is a phase; learning brings change, and changes change societal outlook.

THE PLACE OF A MOTHER

By: Olufadi Balarabe Ayuba. Let her know the day she was born nakedly beautiful with tears of joy rolling down her stunningly soft cheeks.  Let her know the day she had enough words to say but could only speak through the inexhaustible care of her beloved mother.  Let her know those days she could not by herself take some walks down the road, but could comfortably tour the entire city tied on her mother's back. Let her know those days when she had to cry all night before she could answer nature's call, except lullabies were sung to ease her trips.  Let her know the days she couldn't bathe herself, compelling her mother to wake up early, warm the water, and ignore her refusal to take a bath every morning!  Let her know the day she couldn't do makeovers to beautify herself, as her mother took center stage to apply "Dusting Powder" to introduce the beauty of her Darling Princess to the world.  Let her know the days when all others had forsaken, except...
